More librarians with digital skills needed
THE Pangasinan Provincial Library is urging young individuals to enroll in Bachelor of Library and Information Science (BLIS) courses, emphasizing the crucial and changing role this profession plays in the digital age.
The BLIS program equips students with the skills and knowledge necessary for careers in managing, organizing, and preserving information in libraries, archives, and other information centers. The curriculum covers a wide range of topics, including information systems, library technologies, research methods, and the ethical use of information.
Cynthia Vila, head of the Provincial Library, cited the growing importance of trained professionals who can navigate digital spaces, accurately categorize data, protect it from manipulation or misleading edits, and ensure that it remains freely accessible to the public.
“Digitally-skilled librarians are needed for adapting to the technological age, ensuring that the Provincial Library continues to be a vital resource for the community,” she added.
She said rapid digital advancements do not pose a threat to libraries, rather, these innovations help in providing better access to information and connecting with people in new ways. (Ahikam Pasion)
