Cool temperature slows down bangus production
A decline in bangus (milkfish) production is expected in the coming months as growth rate slows down with the drop in temperature.
Efren Arenas, a fishpond caretaker in Dagupan City, said bangus supply in the market usually decreases during the colder period of the year as these grow slower.
Bangus farmers are also facing additional challenges with the recent series of typhoons, and many have taken precautionary measures such as raising nets around their ponds to prevent fish from escaping when the water level rises.
Fishery expert Dr. Westly Rosario offered guidance to local farmers, recommending a reduction in feeds during the cooler, rainier months to minimize waste.
He said bangus consume less during the colder season, and remnants of unconsumed feeds will drop at the bottom of the pond and ultimately rot, which could cause more problems.
Bangus are considered tropical fish, and a ‘hot’ water species, which is why they are more active during hot weather. (Ahikam Pasion)
