Modern jeepney’s high-cost plague operators
CONSOLIDATED jeepney operators in Pangasinan are eager to adopt the transport modernization program but are plagued by the high cost of China-made units.
Bernard Tuliao, president of the One Pangasinan Transport Federation (OPTF) composed of some 2,500 traditional jeepneys and other public utility vehicles, said they continue to search for cheaper options and cost-effective solutions.
He cited the efforts of a local manufacturer in Calasiao, which has introduced a Class 1 modernized jeep priced at only ₱998,000 but still with limited production.
The cost of the Calasiao-made units is about half of the Class 2 modernized jeeps imported from China at over ₱2 million.
