Mangaldan hog industry faces decline

By July 15, 2024Business

THE hog industry in Mangaldan is currently facing significant setbacks due to shortage of pigs being processed at the local slaughterhouse.

\According to the Municipal Agriculture Office (MAO), former hog raisers who were affected by the African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak have not returned to pig farming.

As a result, the town’s slaughterhouse is relying on pigs sourced from other towns and provinces resulting in a decline in the local hog industry.

However, there is hope among hog raisers that the ASF vaccine will soon be made available for trial, as previously announced by the Department of Agriculture (DA).

The vaccines, produced in Vietnam, will undergo a commercial trial in the country soon.

Meanwhile, the Samahang Industriya ng Agricultura (SINAG) has issued a reminder about vaccine usage because the vaccine contains live virus components, and further testing is required before widespread implementation. (Ahikam Pasion)
