Eggs, poultry prices rise this week

THE Department of Agriculture (DA) announced that egg prices may rise by 10 to 20 percent as the school opening approaches.

According to the latest monitoring in Malimgas Market in Dagupan City, the price range for medium eggs was P7 to P8. One tray of extra-large eggs cost P280, and sold P10 to P11 apiece.

Isidro Manuel, an egg distributor, said eggs delivered to Malimgas Market sold at P5.50 to P6, while medium ‘betag’, or cracked eggs are sold for P6.

The DA earlier said an increase in demand for eggs happens, especially with the school openings. This school year 2024-2025, opening of classes on July 29.

Manuel also warned that aside from eggs, poultry is also affected but by the effect of the “third quarter syndrome” — the outbreak period of diseases affecting layers, leading to higher mortality rates and reduced production.

In the first half of July, the prevailing farm gate price of medium eggs was P6.46 per piece, higher than last month’s P6.07 per piece and P5.80 per piece for the same month last year.

Poultry price in Malimgas Market ranges from P190 to P220.
