Manaoag breaks ground for new public market
FINALLY, Manaoag town will soon have a new public market with parking space after a groundbreaking ceremony on June 13, 2024.
Mayor Jeremy Agerico Rosario said the two-storey public market, funded by a P239.6-million loan from the Land Bank of the Philippines, will feature modern amenities including an escalator and an elevator to accommodate the elderly and persons with disabilities. The current public market is already about a century old, he said.
Clearing of the area starts this week and construction immediately follows, he said.
There will be 540 stalls inside three buildings with road network inside.
Rosario expressed optimism that the new market will boost the local economy, tourism, and commerce, particularly benefiting the town’s weekly influx of between 56,000 visitors to 57,0000 who come to the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Manaoag, a popular pilgrimage site.
He said it is unfortunate that visitors who come to the pilgrimage site still go to nearby areas to buy their needs. But once the new public market is finished, Rosario said they need not go far anymore.
It will be complemented by the construction of a pasalubong center project of Fourth District Rep.Christopher de Venecia at the patio of the basilica where Pangasinan products can be bought.
According to the Department of Tourism, Manaoag is the number one tourist destination in Region 1 and the agency estimates about 7.6 million tourists/pilgrims coming here once projects like this is done. The number of tourists coming here doubles or even triples during special church events, he added.
The project is expected to be completed in 2025. (Eva Visperas)
