THE National Tobacco Administration (NTA) provided farmers P21.5 million for the 2023-2024 farming season and some 400 tobacco farmers already availed of P8 million of the Curing Barn Assistance Program (CBAP).

Roger Madriaga, NTA-Pangasinan branch manager, said 400 tobacco farmers used the cash to buy equipment to protect their crops from rain or too much sun while 705 received P13.5 million in cash assistance and in kind, i.e., fertilizers and pesticides, as part of the tobacco contract growing system.

The system has three parts: money, technology, and marketing.

Meanwhile, he said only 1 to 2 percent of the over 2,000 hectares of tobacco farms in the province were affected by the El NiƱo phenomenon.

The last season for planting tobacco is from October to Jan. 15. (Ahikam Pasion)
