THE Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) recently authorized Gov. Ramon Guico III to seal a partnership with the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) for the implementation of the Coconut Fertilization Project for CY 2024.

The SP resolution on May 6 cited PCA’s implementation of the Coconut Planting and Replanting Project to revitalize the coconut industry with the planting 100 million trees from 2023 to 2028, and the Coconut Fertilization Project (CFP) to enhance the coconut productivity involving the rehabilitation of low-bearing palms through the application of Agricultural Grade Salt Fertilizers (AGSF).

Both seek to increase farmers’ incomes and drive economic development within local government units.

Section 23 of Republic Act No. 11985, or the Philippine Salt Industry Development Act provides for the mandatory use “… of domestically produced salt in its programs, including the fertilization of coconut farms by the PCA.

The Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPAG), owns and manages a 130-hectare salt farm in Bolinao town with an available supply of approximately 3,000 metric tons of salt, and has the capacity to supply the required quantity of locally-produced Agricultural Grade Salt Fertilizer for the Coconut Fertilization Program of the PCA.

The resolution, authored by Fifth District Nicholi Jan Louie Sison, acknowledged that a partnership with the PCA will help achieve the goals for the coconut industry for the benefit of both small coconut and salt farmers.

A memorandum of understanding shall be entered into between the province of Pangasinan represented by Gov. Guico and the PCA represented by its Administrator and CEO Dr. Dexter Buted for this purpose. (Eva Visperas)
