THE Marine Protected Area in Barangay Victory in Bolinao town was seeded earlier this month with 6,000 abalone juveniles from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources – Regional Mariculture Technology Demonstration Center (BFAR-RMATDeC) in Alaminos City to revive the industry in the town.

According to a report from BFAR-Regional Office 1, these abalones were provided to repopulate bodies of water where the species nearly vanished due to excessive gathering.

Juan Sicat, local fisherman, confirmed that abalone, known locally as “burda-burda” was once abundant in Bolinao but has become scarce over the years.

Last year, BFAR-RMATDeC already released abalone juveniles in Barangay Lucero in Bolinao.

Meanwhile, Ed Ronquil, technical lead staff in RMATDeC’s abalone breeding and seed production, reported that 3,000 juveniles were also dispersed in Anda town, while another 2,000 is set for release in Bani town next week. Additionally, 400 juveniles were provided to PSU for research purposes.

Abalone, a high-value, single-shelled herbivorous marine mollusk, is prized in the culinary world for its rich and flavorful meat. (Eva Visperas)
