MBTF expels Bulacan bangus from Dagupan
CITY EXCLUSIVE FOR DAGUPAN BANGUS
THE Bulacan bangus, whose inflow into Dagupan was allowed by the past city administration, is finally banned in all markets in Dagupan, according to Mayor Belen Fernandez.
Fernandez confirmed that only the Dagupan bangus and the milkfish produced in other coastal areas of Pangasinan can be sold at the city’s Magsaysay Fish Market and other markets in the city.
In a press conference on Tuesday, April 23, Fernandez said it was ironic that while the past Lim administration was promoting the Bangus Festival as a tourist come-on, it allowed the Bulacan bangus to compete directly with the indigenous Dagupan bangus.
Fernandez said she had to put to stop the entry of the Bulacan bangus into the city to protect the integrity of the Dagupan bangus, which is definitely far superior in quality than the bangus in other provinces.
To ensure that no more Bulacan bangus will enter Dagupan at any time, Fernandez ordered the City Agricultural Office to maintain 24/7 alert along the city highways leading to the Magsaysay Fish Market, especially at the latter’s entrance.
Fernandez enumerated other strides at the 2024 Dagupan Bangus Festival, to protect the Dagupan bangus and further promote its marketability not only locally but overseas.
Among these is the relaunching of the branding the Dagupan bangus, a program she launched during her previous administration but was discontinued by the Lim administration as soon as it took over in 2022.
Fernandez said she has begun discussing the branding of the Dagupan bangus with the Department of Trade and Industry and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources on, and discussing with BFAR a co-management arrangement for the operation of the RP-Korean Sea Food Processing Plant in Bonuan Binloc.
The co-management agreement of the RP- Korea Seafood Processing Plant will promote exports of deboned and marinated Dagupan bangus to the United Stated States and the Middle East soon, she said.
She also announced the reopening of the bangus deboning center at the Malimgas Public Market already equipped with a modern blast freezer, which is run by the private sector. (Leonardo Micua)
