A COMMUNITY of farmers and fisherfolk in Barangay San Felipe West in San Nicolas town decided to celebrate their tilapia harvest like a festival in their barangay on March 19, 2024.

According to a Facebook post of BFAR Regional Office 1, the Lagpan Agricultural and Livelihood Association (LALA) marked the occasion with pride as they reaped the rewards of their hard work – a partial harvest yielded an impressive 107 kilograms of tilapia, fetching a total of P10,165 in sales when sold at P95 per kilo.

To showcase the different ways of serving tilapia, the wives of LALA members prepared an array of delectable dishes using the freshly harvested fish, adding a significant touch to the festivities.

This marks only the third harvest for the association, their previous harvests totaled 2,700 kilograms that earned it P256,500 is sales.

The journey began under the Fish Production Enhancement Program of Bayanihan II, a P10 million project spanning hatchery to nursery to grow-out operations for tilapia.

Commencing in early 2021, the project was turned over to the association in December 2022, providing them with enough resources to embark on their successful venture.

With an expansive production area of 1.4 hectares, the association invested in enhancing their operations, from purchasing handheld radios to facilitate communication among members to installing CCTV for monitoring to ensure efficiency and security in their farm.

The association’s dedication did not go unnoticed, as it was honored with the Gawad Pagkilala by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources for its active role in bolstering fisheries production in the region. (Eva Visperas)
