MORE farmlands in Tayug were already reported to be severely affected by the El Niño phenomenon.

The Department of Agriculture–Region I (DA-1) said some 30 farmers tilling 34 hectares of farmlands in Barangay Evangelista, Tayug town, have appealed for help on seeing their farms dry from the absence of irrigation with the onset of the El Niño.

In response, DA Regional Technical Director Dennis Taktak said the farmers were provided with corn seeds because corn, compared to rice and other crops can grow without water.

He added that to further respond to the expected impact caused by the El Niño, the DA-1 has also provided water pump and engine set, and solar-powered water pumps to farmers cooperatives and associations.

The DA-1 also assisted in repairing and rehabilitating irrigation canals while procurement of fuel subsidy is now being processed to assist farmers operate their water pumps. (Ahikam Pasion)
