Onion farmgate price crashes to P10 per kilo

WITH the onion harvest season reaching its peak, farmgate prices came crashing down in Bayambang.

Meanwhile, the Department of Agriculture Region I (DA-I) reported that selling price of onion in public markets have plunged 200%, from P180 per kilogram to P40 to P50 per kilogram.

Onion grower Ronnie Ringor of Barangay Manambong Parte said farmgate price being dictated is now P10 per kilogram on a wholesale basis by onion buyers and middlemen.

While the P10 farmgate price does not spell disaster to farmers, he said the price is lower than the usual in the past but transactions remain on cash basis.

“Nababarat kami pero okay lang kasi cash agad ang bigay nila,” he intoned.

Fortunately, ‘harabas (army worm) has not affected much of Pangasinan’s onion farmlands, resulting in higher yields in the province.

Price of onion is expected to decrease further in the following months, as the second cropping season for onion began this January, and the second harvest is set on April. (Ahikam Pasion)
