Watch out for Bani fishermen’s special embutido, calamares
A RECENT training of fishermen in Bani town taught them to become entrepreneurs and enhance their livelihood – specifically to develop skills to transform marine catches into delightful products that would help establish the town as the exclusive source.
Nestled between the bountiful Lingayen Gulf and the West Philippine Sea, Bani boasts of rich marine resources in its coastal waters.
Mayor Facundo Palafox had requested the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-Region 1 (BFAR-1) through the Regional Fisheries Training and Fisherfolk Coordination Division (RFTFCD) and the Provincial Fisheries Office (PFO)-Pangasinan to conduct a two-day training program for the local fisherfolk.
The training focused on processing tuna into embutido and patty. Additionally, the participants learned techniques for producing bottled and breaded pusit or calamares with ideas on how to market these.
The fishermen have since gained confidence that they can earn more by selling their catches as processed products at higher prices than selling them raw. They also appreciate the valuable insights provided during lectures on marketing strategies for their newly developed products.
“Soon, our town will not only be known for the luscious watermelon grown in our fertile lands, but for marine products caught from the pristine sea, which we developed into something more yummy,” they said.
The initiative was part of the Bani local government’s commitment to utilize the prize awarded for being the top coastal town in the BFAR’s Regional Malinis at Masaganang Karagatan (MMK) 2021. (Eva Visperas)
