ONLY 7.89% OF JEEPNEYS MODERNIZED

OF the total registered 2,259 traditional jeepneys plying various routes in Pangasinan, only 179 (7.89%) owners have consolidated and modernized in line with the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP).

Alliance of United Transport Organization Provincewide president Bernard Tuliao said phasing out the 92.11 percent of existing traditional jeepneys that have not yet modernized until December 31 will result in a serious problem to commuting public in the province.

The Department of Transportation announced that after the December 31 deadline, traditional jeepneys that failed to consolidate into cooperatives or corporation will not be given Land Transportation Office registration.

Saying that Pangasinan PUVs cannot implement consolidation in full force this year as all of them are “single-owned”,  Tuliao said commuters will have to suffer from lack of public transport vehicles in major routes.

To date, several transport cooperatives in different towns have already acquired their respective modernized vehicles, these will not be enough to service commuters, said Tuliao.

Meanwhile Tuliao said no jeepney driver participated in the transport strike launched by PISTON and Manibela last week calling for a halt to PUV modernization, but added that most sympathized with the strikers and shared with their cause.

The Lingayen-Dagupan Transport Service has 41 units to date and is reportedly the leading transport cooperative with the most number of modernized units. (IMF Dagupan Radio/ Badz Agtalao)
