235 jeepney owners warned: No consolidation, No LTO registration
DEADLINE: DECEMBER 31, 2023
THE Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) Region 1 told 235 jeepney owners in Pangasinan to consolidate for the government’s Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP) before December 31 deadline or lose LTO registration.
Atty. Anabelle Nullar, LTFRB region I director, said only 2,256 out of 2,491, or 90.57-percent of total owners in Pangasinan have completed their consolidation and the deadline for it is December 31 this year.
Nullar warned that single entity jeepney owners that failed to consolidate by December 31, will not be allowed by LTO to register in 2024, and therefore, cannot ply routes already reserved for accredited cooperatives.
The government’s PUVMP is comprised of 10 components – one of which is consolidation.
Consolidation phase refers to owners agreeing to create or join a cooperative to support the modernization program that will qualify it to take out loans from government banks to purchase modern jeepneys with minimal interest rate.
Nullar, however, clarified that after the December 31 consolidation deadline, there will be no immediate phaseout of traditional jeepneys.
Nullar reminded the owners that consolidation is a requirement for vehicle registration next year.
She assured commuters that if all 235 owners continue to resist consolidation, there will be no significant impact on commuters as the number of modernized jeeps in the province are enough to fill the demand. (Ahikam Pasion)
