THE Regional Tripartite Wage Productivity Board 1 has approved a daily wage hike, of P30 to P35 for non-agricultural workers in Region 1 and will take effect on November 6, 2023.

Under the new wage order, officially known as Wage Order No. 22, the minimum wage rates have been increased to P435 per day for all non-agricultural workers in establishments with 10 or more employees, and P402 per day for non-agricultural establishments employing less than 10 workers.

Wage Order No. 21 issued on May 16, 2022, set P400 per day for all non-agricultural workers in larger establishments and P372 per day for their counterparts in smaller enterprises.

The wage order is designed to cover all minimum wage earners in the private sector throughout the region, regardless of their job title, position, or employment status, and irrespective of the method by which they are compensated.

Wage Order No. 22 also carries a penal provision: any person, corporation, trust, firm, partnership, association, or entity that fails to adhere to the prescribed wage increase shall be dealt with in accordance with the provisions of Section 12 of RA 6722, as amended by RA No. 8188.

For domestic workers, RTWPB – Region I, Wage Order No. RB 1-DW-04 granted a monthly increase of P500, bringing the monthly wage rate of domestic workers in the region to P5,500.

It will be recalled that labor groups filed a petition for an increase in the minimum wage for Ilocos Region saying that the then current wage rates were “far below the needed daily income for a family of five to survive in the face of rising prices of basic goods and services. (Leonardo Micua)
