Dagupan biz group raises concern over wage hike order

THE Metro Dagupan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the leading business group in Dagupan, has expressed concerns following the recent wage hike order that will raise the minimum wage in the Ilocos region to P35, effective November 6.

In its statement, the group acknowledged that while the wage increase is seen as a “blessing to workers”, it may impose an additional burden on small-scale employers, potentially affecting their daily operations.

Wage Order No. RB 1-22 stipulates that non-agricultural establishments with 10 or more workers will receive an additional P35 on top of their current P400 minimum daily wage.

Similarly, non-agricultural establishments with fewer than 10 employees and agriculture establishments will add P30 on top of their P372 minimum daily wage. These changes will come into effect on November 6, raising minimum daily wages to P435 and P402 for the respective sectors.

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) is expected to conduct inspections of establishments once the wage order is implemented. DOLE has warned of legal consequences in cases of non-compliance, which may include business shutdowns and fines.

The business group’s concerns reflect the potential economic impact of the wage hike on employers, especially small-scale businesses in the region. (Ahikam Pasion)
