CLOSE MONITORING AT MAGSAYSAY MARKET ORDERED

THE discovery of 400 kilos of bangus in rotting stage at the Magsaysay Fish Market in Dagupan City at past 12 a.m. on Saturday, spurred the City Agriculture Office (CAO) to tighten its security at all entry points to the city’s markets.

Personnel of CAO, market inspectors from the City Treasurer’s Office, City Health Office and the Task Force Anti-Littering from the City Mayor’s Office, found 10 boxes weighing 40 kilos each (of rotting fish per box), abandoned and ready to be unloaded at the Magsaysay Fish Market.

City Agriculturist Patrick Dizon suspected that the rotten fish, below the standard marketing size, may have been harvested from a fish kill area brought in by traders from Western Pangasinan.

Since the trader was not identified and no fish vendors were made to buy the rotting fish,  no case could be filed.

The security around markets are usually tight but in this case the personnel at the Magsaysay Market were clearly remiss in their duties.

While investigation was still going on, the rotting fish were referred to the City Waste Management Division for disposal.

Market vendors warned unscrupulous traders to stop attempting to slip in rotten fish because they can readily tell which are rotten at the same time the city government should watch out for another attempt because the reputation of the Dagupan bangus and Magsaysay Market, as a source of fresh fish products, are at stake.  (Leonardo Micua)
