THE Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Region I (DA-BFAR I) inaugurated the Regional Seaweeds Nursery in Anda town on September 19, 2023.

Earlier in June this year, DA-BFAR 1 entered into a memorandum of agreement with the Anda local government to establish and develop a Regional Seaweeds Nursery located off Tondol village. The MOA was signed by BFAR Regional Director Rosario Segundina Gaerlan and Anda Mayor Joganie Rarang.

BFAR I maintained a two-hectare seaweeds nursery in Anda since 2019, serving as an experimental area for seaweeds production. Due to its feasibility for seaweeds production, it has been converted into a nursery, providing seaweeds cuttings to fisherfolk starting their own seaweeds farms.

Mayor Rarang believes that the seaweeds nursery will add to the town’s appeal as a tourist destination, known for its scenic beaches.

Under the MOA, Anda allows and permits BFAR to use an additional 3.81 hectares of its municipal waters for the seaweed nursery, bringing the total area to 5.81 hectares for the production of invertebrates like sea urchin, sea cucumber, and abalone.

During the launch, BFAR and LGU seeded the area near the nursery with 500 abalone juveniles from the Regional Mariculture Technology Development Center in Alaminos City.

Vice Mayor Erwin Catabay, who represented Mayor Rarang during the launch, thanked BFAR for continuously supporting the town’s fisherfolk through projects like the seaweed nursery. (Eva Visperas)
