Native garlic sells at P320; Taiwan garlic, P120.
FEW GARLIC FARMERS IN PANGASINAN
THE production of native garlic in Pangasinan remains low, enabling traders to flood local markets with imported garlic from Taiwan.
Because of its scarcity and low supply, the price of native garlic remains high at P320 per kilo compared to Taiwan’s garlic at P120 .
Households and eateries prefer the smaller native garlic as it is more potent, having stronger aroma and flavor.
The Samahang Indstriya ng Agrikultura (SINAG) says native garlic is very expensive owing to low supply. It attributed it to only few farmers choosing to plant the variety because of higher risks involved in planting it.
Mang Rudy, a cook in a local carinderia in Dagupan City, said he uses the local garlic despite the high price of the commodity in the market.
“Mas malasa ang putahe kapag ito ang inilalagay”, he said. (Ahikam Pasion)
