Local jeepneys still not ready to modernize their units

JEEPNEY drivers plying the Sta. Barbara-Dagupan and Calasiao-Dagupan routes again reiterated their request to the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to allow them to retain their traditional jeepneys while they are unable to comply with the Public Transportation Modernization Program.

They said they still cannot afford to buy modernized jeepneys and amortize P30,000 to the bank per month. However, they failed to explain why they have not proceeded with the required consolidation many transport cooperatives have done and have since been operating many routes in Pangasinan.

They asked LTFRB for partial implementation in their favor since their jeepneys are limited to short routes unlike the modernized jeepneys that ply longer routes.

They concede that if LTFRB will not consider their plight, they have no alternative but to ground their traditional jeepneys and sell these as scrap metal and many families will be without means to maintain their daily maintenance.

Farmers hail coming of rainy days

FARMERS in Pangasinan are elated over Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration’s (PAGASA) announcement that the rainy season has started.

Manuel Solis, a farmer from Malasiqui,  said that the rains will be a big help to farms like his that have no access to National Irrigation Administration’s facilities especially with the start of the  planting season soon. Rainwater will enable him  to plow and harrow his farm and sow rice seeds.

Solis said with the expected rains, he no longer has to spend for fuel to operate an irrigation pump.

Help coming for Dagupan oyster farmers

THE Dagupan City Agriculture Office (CAO) has vowed to help oyster farmers in Barangay Lucao to improve the quality and volume of their products.

City Agriculturist Patrick Dizon said oyster raisers need to adopt modern methods in order to produce more and earn better profit.

Lucao is today Dagupan’s biggest producer of oysters although the commodity is also being raised in Bonuan Gueset, Pugaro, Salapingao, Calmay and other barangays.

But to succeed, Dizon said a sustainable aqua culture production must be undertaken that will benefit not only oyster producers but all fish farmers and other stakeholders.

Dizon said his office will coordinate with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources and the Department of Labor and Employment  in connection with their “Patalabaan” program for adoption by local oyster producers.
