Villasis eggplant yield down 40% due to intense heat

THE town of Villasis, known for its eggplant industry, is facing serious threat. Its eggplant yield is down by 40% today.

Data from the Villasis Municipal Agriculture Office shows the town has an average eggplant yield of 25 tons per hectare.

However, recent harvests have placed average eggplant yield to only 15 tons per hectare –  or only 60 percent of the town’s normal total average eggplant production.

Due to intense heat, eggplants have dried up and fizzled, resulting in losses for eggplant farmers.

To recoup their losses, farmers have temporarily shifted to planting corn that, requires less water, and is more resilient to heat.

PAGASA warned that things will get worse, after El Niño alert has been released. (Ahikam Pasion)
