Frequent fish kills ahead

A POSSIBLE shortage of fish is foreseen in the next few days on account of the seemingly oft-repeated fish kills brought about by the abrupt change of weather from hot to cold.

Fish farmers confirmed they are now keenly watching their fish stocked in ponds and cages 24/7 and expressed their readiness to harvest prematurely once they see a sign of an emerging fish kill.

When rains follow intense heat of the blazing sun from 10 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., it’s a condition not conducive to the fish in captivity because fish that cannot adjust to the abrupt change in weather – from hot to cold, they die and just float in the water.

In fact, a fish kill already occurred in fishponds and cages in Dagupan and Pangasinan.

Personnel of the Bantay Ilog Task Force have been mobilized by Mayor Belen Fernandez to monitor the condition of fishes being sold to the public.

Employers opposed to legislated wage increase of P150

A PRIVINCE-wide survey conducted by IFM Radio Dagupan showed employers are objecting to the P150 legislated wage increase already approved in the Senate, pointing out that the present economic condition does not warrant the granting of such wage increase at this time.

Citing the havoc brought about to their businesses by the last pandemic, most of the employers said they will be forced to close shop once the legislated P150 across-the-board increase is forced on them.

The employers prefer the new wage increase to be decided by Regional Tripartite Wage Production Board (RTWPB) after consultation with all sectors of the economy. (RTWPB is set to convene next week to discuss the issue on the possibility of issuing a new wage order to address the plight of workers).

On the other hand, workers prefer Congress to decide the across-the-board wage increase because the latter is more considerate than regional wage boards.

Trike drivers not happy about latest fuel price increase

TRICYCLE drivers in Dagupan were grumbling over the latest round of fuel price increase last May 23.

They say the increase in fuel prices are not matched by an increase in fares, leaving them with nothing to bring home to their families.

At the same time, demanding for a fare hike may not help too if commuters cannot afford to pay higher fares.
