PUV group wants modernization plan extended for two more years
THE Alliance of United Transport Organization Provincewide (AUTOPRO) Pangasinan expressed willingness to support the government’s PUV Modernization Program, provided its members, jeepney operators and drivers, are given two years to comply.
Bernard Tuliao, AUTOPRO-Pangasinan head, in an interview Monday, April 17, said
“intrinsically, the modernization will ultimately benefit the drivers if implemented properly” but added the government should give them one to two years more to raise funds needed for purchase of modern units.
Tuliao cited the financial difficulty of others to adjust.
“Kailangan namin ng malaking pondo”, he said as he confirmed that compliance with requirements is being seriously studied, and identifying possible sources of funds is ongoing.
As of writing, there are 1,200 traditional jeepney units in Pangasinan targeted to be phased out to be replaced by the modern PUVs.
Meanwhilem Tuliao continues to assure commuters patronizing traditional jeeps that the units are safe and roadworthy.
“Patuloy po ang pag-check namin sa mga units ng mga miyembro, para masiguro na roadworthy at ligtas po ito para sa publiko”, he said. (Ahikam Pasion)
