Priest plans venture on hito culture for parish
A CATHOLIC priest wows participants for his keen interest during the three-day training on aquaculture technologies on pond culture technology of catfish and milkfish held at the Regional Mariculture Technodemo Center in Alaminos City on April 19-22.
Father Mariano Antonio Ranera Jr., 62, a priest at Our Lady of Pilar Parish in Zaragoza Parish in Bolinao town joined the training conducted by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region I that included updates on catfish and milkfish industry (recent technologies/roadmap) and basic biology of both commodities.
Ranera said the training was timely as he was planning to establish a hito (catfish) pond at the 13-hectare Rogati Oasis Organic Farm in Sampaloc, Bolinao owned by their congregation.
He said when he got a call from a staff of the Pangasinan Provincial Agriculture Office informing him that the BFAR will conduct a training on hito culture, he immediately registered as a participant.
He said the lectures on various technology were informative and easily understandable and will be useful in the farm.
Meanwhile, Barangay Captain Lino Barnachea of Bamban, Infanta, also joined the seminar as he plans to revive the idle two ponds that he owns.
He used to culture tilapia, but now wants to shift to hito, after he learned that hito is easier to culture.
Like Ranera, Barnachea was informed by a local agriculture officer of the BFAR-sponsored training, and immediately grabbed the opportunity to attend.
He said he will still ask the BFAR for technical assistance when he starts to operate his ponds.
The three-day training was attended by participants from the towns Anda, Bolinao, Bani, San Manuel, San Nicolas, Binmaley, Mangaldan in Pangasinan, and Aringay in La Union.
All participants received hito fry, fertilizer, feeds, and harvesting tools like sorter, seine net, scoop net and plastic bags. (Eva Visperas)
