Short routes in Dagupan need traditional jeepneys, say

DRIVERS of traditional jeepneys believe that Dagupan has only short routes, therefore, it is they, not modern jeepneys, that should still be served by them.  Modern jeepneys, with their new features and should be serving long routes. are not necessary in Dagupan because they travel only very short distances.

This is among the arguments advanced by drivers of traditional jeepneys from Dagupan still opposed to the Public Transportation Modernization Program of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).

Since only a few modernized jeepneys will be left serving the routes to convey thousands of passengers, the drivers asked LTFRB to still allow the traditional jeepneys to serve the public along the short routes while modernization plans are still not in full effect.  (Rona Racca)

Total control of Fall Armyworms still not possible – DA

THE Department of Agriculture Region 1 admitted it is having difficulty in totally eradicating pests that have wrought havoc to many farm lands in Pangasinan.

According to DA Region I Crop Protection Center Chief Marivic Begonia, this is based on their studies and observation that it is not possible that the Fall Armyworms that infested many plantations will be fully eradicated.

She said available technologies can only reduce the degree of infestation of this kind of pest in many farms and advised farmers to use “bio-control agents” like lure traps to reduce the degree of infestation of Fall Armyworms in their farms. Begonia called on farmers to inform DA if they see any eggs of Fall Armyworms in their farms so it can send technicians to help them control the pest. (Jhon Caranto)

Cheaper imported frozen meat competing with local fresh meat

STIFF competition posed by imported frozen meat was among the reasons cited by meat vendors at the Malasiqui Public Market why their businesses slowed down during the past months. They said that consumers settling for the cheaper imported frozen meat than fresh meat sourced out from the Malasiqui Double A slaughterhouse.

Rizzas Isuan, a meat vendor at the Malasiqui market, said it is the imported frozen meat that had continuously made her and fellow meat vendors lose in their businesses heavily.

She said their present operating costs including stall rental and post-mortem fee of P125 per hog they slaughter daily are making it difficult for them to breakeven. She  said they brought their problem to the attention of the town’s  Slaughterhouse Office and Agriculture Office and are still awaiting their replies. Councilor Dang Mamaril, vowed to help local meat vendors and asked them to file a formal complaint with the municipal government. (Jhon Caranto)

Cojuangco eyes dairy farm in Mangatarem

SECOND District Rep. Mark Cojuangco has spelled out a plan to introduce dairy farming in  his district to produce milk and supply the needs of malnourished young learners.

Cojuangco seeks to put up in Mangatarem a project similar to the Laoag Dairy Farm that he built when he was then serving as Congressman of the Fifth District. It can be recalled that the Laoac Dairy Farm was taken over by the past provincial administration and continued by the new provincial administration to become the show-window of dairy production in Pangasinan.

Cojuangco is seeking to initially bring milk-producing cows in the second district to become the backbone of dairy farming. With a dairy farm,  it could continuously sustained the needs for milk of malnourished children enrolled at different pre-schools, he said. (Rona Racca)
