Opinion survey on Labrador as site for nuclear plants on
SENTIMENTS and opinions of residents are presently being sought by the Labrador local government over the proposal to make Labrador the seat of the first operational nuclear power plants in the Philippines.
This was confirmed after the Labrador local government distributed survey forms seeking people’s approval for the construction of not one but six nuclear power plants in their town.
In an interview by IFM Dagupan, Mayor Ernesto Acain, said the ongoing survey was initiated to determine sentiments of Labrador residents, particularly if they favor their town to be the seat of six nuclear power plants.
A people’s consultation was held last week of January where a top local official explained the technical aspects of various power generating plants, including nuclear plants.
Meanwhile, Mayor Acain pointed the importance and the good benefit of having a nuclear power plant, among them zero pollution and the provision of cheaper electricity in homes and factories.
With nuclear energy, he said, the country will have a more reliable source of cheaper energy that will help attract more investors to the country that could eventually propel the economy.
He did not, however, discuss the risk of nuclear energy on people’s lives should a disaster occur like what happened at Chernobyl, Ukraine and Fukushima, Japan.
However, Labrador resident maintain that the continuing consultation on the proposal should not be limited in Labrador alone but to the whole country, particularly in Pangasinan and in the region. (Jhon Caranto, 104.7 IFM Dagupan)
