Mutilated peso bills can be replaced – BSP
GOOD news for residents still in possession of mutilated bills.
The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Northern Luzon is still accepting partially torn or burned bills and replaces these with brand new bills they can use during the holidays.
Dante Cambri, senior research specialist at the BSP-NL, however, clarified that only banknotes with 60-percent of the bill intact and shows the value, signatures, and security thread may still be replaced at the BSP office or in kiosks that will be installed in public areas soon.
“Dapat ay may natitirang 60% sa banknote natin,” said Cambri.
Cambri advised not to wipe or shake off the debris from a burned banknote since it could remove the remaining features essential to qualify for replacement even as he warned that obvious deliberate or intentional mutilation of the banknotes will not be replaced.
“Makakasuhan po yung mga sasadyaing sirain ang mga pera natin”, said Cambri.
The Presidential Decree No. 247 says that individuals who are guilty of willful mutilation or destruction of banknotes will be fined PHP 20,000 and/or will face imprisonment of maximum of five years. The PD 247 also prohibits stapling or marking banknotes. (Ahikam Pasion)
