ILLEGAL FISH PENS IN SAN FABIAN

THE crackdown of illegal fish pens in San Fabian town revealed that eighty percent of the illegal fish structures in San Fabian rivers are not owned by residents of the town.

This was revealed by the town’s Municipal Agriculture Office (MAO).

Johnny Jugo Paraan, Municipal Fishery Officer, in a radio interview, said most of the owners of the dismantled illegal structures are from Dagupan City.

The MAO said to numerous illegal structures built on the river, pushed its carrying capacity to the limit that resulted in the pollution and stench that pervaded emanating from the river.

When dismantling and demolition operations began last June 30, many of the owners of the illegal structures again asked for more time to enable them to harvest. But then outgoing Mayor Constante Agbayani rejected their plea since they had long been told to dismantle their illegal structures.

Paraan said the town is out to launch a recovery program for the town’s river system.

After the dismantling operations, Paraan said programs that will teach residents how to harvest aquatic resources without harming the river’s ecosystem will be implemented.

He said Mayor Marlyn Agbayani has been briefed about worsening siltation in the town’s river system. (Ahikam Pasion)
