Villa Verde trail reopens after landslide
VILLA Verde Trail in San Nicolas town, an offroad historical national highway, was reopened to motorists last week after a series of landslides made the road impassable since May 26.
This was confirmed by San Nicolas Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management. officer Bernard Leo Serquina, who said the road had to be closed due to landslides brought by heavy rains and thunderstorms.
The closing of the Villa Verde Trail prevented residents of Barangay Malico from accessing población area.
Serquina, however, continued to warn the Malico residents about recurring landslides on the road during the rainy season.
Malico, the highest peak in the Caraballo Mountain range (also called ‘Little Baguio’), has been gaining popularity on social media lately, due to its low temperature and scenic routes, comparable to the climate in Baguio City.
The Villa Verde Trail, connecting San Nicolas town to neighboring province of Santa Fe, Nueva Vizcaya, has had a grand history. It was the same trail used by troops of the American liberating forces to surround the retreating Japanese soldiers. towards the end of World War II.
Barangay Malico has long since been a subject of boundary dispute between the provinces of Pangasinan and Nueva Vizcaya. (Ahikam Pasion)
