NTC warns public vs spam “job” messages
THE National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) again reminds the public to take extra caution in dealing with spam text messages offering jobs, privileges and other attractive offers aimed at swindling takers amid reports of increasing number of spam messages being received by mobile phone users.
Atty. Anna Minelle Laxamana, spokesperson of NTC-Region 1, said the spam messages sent as a blast message to thousands of mobile numbers at one time are perpetrated by crime syndicates.
She noted the National Privacy Commission suspects that global syndicates are behind the spam messages.
“Iniimbestigahan pa ang mga kaso na may kinalaman dito ng PNP, NBI, at National Privacy Commission”, Laxamana said.
Because the sim card numbers are prepaid numbers, these are not registered with the NTC, hence, tracing each number proves to be difficult, unlike sim cards that are post-paid or under telecommunication network plans.
Laxamana said most of the victims that fell for the spam messages were individuals who are currently searching for work.
She warned that if one did not apply for work anywhere or participated in a raffle draw, messages claiming one is accepted and will be paid or one won in a raffle, such text messages should be ignored outright.
She urged the public to send the number of scammers to the NTC Region 1 Facebook page so the numbers can be blocked. (Ahikam Pasion)
