Dagupan jeepneys only good for “half-day” operations
JEEPNEY drivers in Dagupan and Pangasinan have no plans to join a nationwide “Tigil Pasada” organized by transport organizations in Metro Manila in protest over the continuing escalation in the pump prices of gasoline and diesel but announced a different scheme to address their dilemma.
Bernard Tuliao, president of the Alliance of United Transport Organizations Province-wide (AUTOPro) said in order to reduce their fuel consumption, some members decided to ply their routes only half of their usual daily runs.
Tuliao revealed his group’s response during the program “Kabayan” hosted by Noli de Castro over the TV station Kapamilya Channel: to operate only from 5: 00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. to bring students to their respective schools, housewives to the markets and workers to their respective offices. Then they go home to rest or help their wives in home chores.
The jeepney drivers return to the routes starting at 5: 00 p.m. to commute students and workers returning to their respective homes.
However, Tuliao said there are still sufficient number of jeepneys around to serve the commuting public from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Tuliao clarified that the transport sector in Dagupan and Pangasinan was not among those granted authority to increase the fare by P1 recently. He said the fare increase was only authorized in the National Capital Region and Central Luzon and other areas.
He said his group wants P5 increased fare per kilometer. (Leonardo Micua)
