Dagupan Bangus prices soar

By June 19, 2022Business

PRICE of world-famous Dagupan Bangus soared by P5 per kilo because of low supply in the market and increasing costs of operations due to rising costs of fuel.

Reports from consignacion vendors at the Magsaysay Wet Market indicated that bangus prices averaged PHP 140, compared to previous months’ PHP130 to PHP135.

The situation was aggravated by the decision of bangus growers to prematurely harvests, for fear of gataw, a local term for a small-scale fishkill due to sudden change in temperature.

Forced harvests resulted in many bangus that have not reached full size being sold in the market.

In Metro Manila, bangus prices being shipped from Pangasinan also soared to PHP 240 per kilo.

Aside from supply problems, the price increase is also being attributed to rising fuel costs.

Meanwhile, the City Agriculture Office continues to monitor the situation in the face of  expected Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) rains that affect fish growth in fish ponds. (Ahikam Pasion)
