SHELLFISHES SAFE TO BE EATEN

AFTER more than two months of prohibition on the consumption of shellfish, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) finally lifted the ban after Bolinao was declared free from red tide.

BFAR’s Shellfish Bulletin No. 11 Series of 2022 released on Friday, June 17, reads “shellfishes gathered from the coastal waters of Bolinao are now free of Paralytic Shellfish Poison (PSP) or toxic red tide, and safe for human consumption.”

The bulletin also said shellfish gathered from coastal waters of Alaminos City, Anda, Bani, and Sual, as are also safe for consumption.

BFAR-1 Regional Director Segundina Gaerlan said the shellfish samples from coastal waters in those areas showed negative of paralytic shellfish poison (PSP) or red tide infection.

With the red tide alert lifted, shellfish from coastal waters in the east may be harvested, consumed, and even shipped to other areas.

However, despite the lifting of the alert, Gaerlan said the BFAR will continue to monitor their waters to ensure public health and to protect the shellfish industry.

It will be recalled that on April 7, BFAR issued its Local Shellfish Advisory No. 1 that announced that coastal waters of Bolinao were positive for PSP or red tide toxin and

sacks of shellfish about to enter Dagupan City and other areas were seized.

Market vendors have since been selling shellfish from P100 to P120 per kilo, from P90 per kilo when the alert was active. (Ahikam Pasion)
