RiceBIS project helps increase farmers’ rice yields
THE Rice Business Innovations System (RiceBIS) Community Modern Farms Project launched in Mangatarem town had helped increase the production of the participating rice farmers.
Through the RiceBIS Community Modern Farms Project of the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice), Corales said the participating farmers in Mangatarem town not only had increased their average yield per hectare from 3.5 metric tons to 4.2 metric tons but also earned a 64% increase in their incomes, selling more than 15,000 metric tons of milled rice in Metro Manila.
The program seeks to develop rice and rice-based enterprises in key provinces nationwide to address farmers’ recurring problems of low productivity and competitiveness as well as cross-cutting issues of food insecurity and poverty in rural farming area, and promotes productivity through improved technology adoption and inculcates the significance of agri-preneurship.
The RiceBIS project has at least 10 farmer clusters covering 400 farmers and more than 300 hectares of farmlands and its clustering approach, one of the major strategies of the DA, especially in terms of providing assistance, proved to be a success. (PIA-1)
