Lingayen LGU builds fish sanctuary, watch tower
THE Lingayen Fish Sanctuary and Watch Tower along the Baywalk was launched on March 7 in a bid to increase fish population in the area.
A joint project of the local and provincial governments and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), the sanctuary is set to install 45 units of concrete artificial reefs at the Marine Protected Area in the town.
BFAR Regional Director Rosario Segundina Gaerlan said the concrete artificial reefs will help fishes spawn eggs to multiply their population and improve marine ecosystem of the area and ultimately boost fishermen’s income.
Lingayen Mayor Leopoldo Bataoil thanked Gov. Amado Espino III who conceptualized the project. “This is a tried, tested and proven formula to increase fish population in the sea,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Watch Tower, installed as an added security to tourists going to Lingayen Beach, will have a rescue boat assigned to it to respond to emergency situations in the area. (Eva Visperas)
