THE Korean-Philippine Seafood Processing Complex in Dagupan City will resume operations after its temporary closure on January 10 owing to deficiencies in submission of administrative requirements.

In a memorandum dated March 10 signed by Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) National Director Eduardo Gongona, addressed to Dennis Tanay, chief, National Fisheries Development Center, BFAR affirmed that “Perusal of the records shows, that the reports, action plan, and certificates has been complied and secured by NFDC. Thus, making the Korean-Philippine Seafood Processing Complex (KP-SPC) compliant with food safety and environmental standards,” it said.

It recalled that the processing complex’s operation was suspended due to non-submission and failure to comply with necessary requirements and its rehabilitation.

Gongona directed Tanay to resume the operations of the KP-SPC “for the best interest of the fisheries industry and our stakeholders”.

It may be recalled that on Feb. 22, 2008, the government of South Korea through the Korean International Cooperation Agency under its Official Development Assistance Grants-In-Aid Program approved and granted $2.2 million or P100-million for the establishment of the SPC inclusive of processing equipment, refrigeration and support facilities.

The plant located at the BFAR complex in Barangay Bonuan Binloc was inaugurated on Nov. 2010.

Former House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr played very vital role in sourcing out the grant.
