THE Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) launched two Filipino-built ringnet fishing vessels on Feb. 28 at the Sual Fish Port Complex.

BFAR Director Eduardo Gongona did a trial sail on one of the 62-footer steel-hulled fishing vessels at the Sual Bay.

Gongona said there is a need to “swarm the West Philippine Sea with fishing vessels so we can catch the 320 metric tons or more of fish that are available annually in the West Philippine Sea.”

The fishing vessels costing over P23 million each are equipped with full machinery and accessories designed to provide identified municipal fisherfolk organizations in Region I and VIII with upgraded and appropriate fishing equipment to improve their fishing capacity and production efficiency.

The fishing vessels will be turned over to members of municipal fisherfolk organizations who will be trained on operating commercial fishing boats, as part of the BFAR’s program to capacitate them so they can fish in commercial waters.

Aside from the two ring net fishing vessels, the DA-BFAR targets to award 35 more fishing vessels, including two ring net, six bag net and 27 handline fishing boats soon.

Technical experts from DA-BFAR will conduct cooperative development and management trainings to the fisherfolk beneficiaries.

Aside from the two newly-launched fishing vessels, two are under construction by Filipino ship-building company Josefa Slipways, that also fabricated two of DA-BFAR’s multi-mission vessels: BFAR Lapu-Lapu and BFAR Francisco Dagohoy. (Eva Visperas)
