New artificial reefs in Lingayen Gulf by March
TO BOOST FISHERFOLK’S LIVELIHOOD
THE Lingayen government will soon start installing concrete artificial reefs along the seabed of the town to create a fish sanctuary that will benefit the town’s fisherfolk.
At the Network Briefing News of the Philippine Information Agency on January 31, Mayor Leopoldo Bataoil said the implementation of the planned project has already been coordinated with the provincial government.
Bataoil said the plan was developed in consultation with the town’s fisherfolk who have since lamented the declining volume of fish in the area.
He said the fishermen employ traditional method.
Bataoil said he expects the installation of the artificial reefs in an area two kilometers from the beach shore to start around the first week of March.
“These will serve as sanctuaries to the fishes and hopefully, these will increase the catch of the fisherfolk,” he added.
Meanwhile, Bataoil said his administration allowed the construction and installation of fish cages along the town’s riverbanks to provide additional livelihood to the residents by raising crabs and other fish species. (Jerick Pasiliao)
