THE Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) is set to pass two ordinances seeking to extend two deadlines: for the payment of business tax and another and for payment of real property tax in the city of Dagupan.

Councilor Dennis Canto, author of the ordinance extending deadline for payment of businesss taxes, said both measures will be passed as soon as the 2022 annual budget of the city is passed since under the Local Government Code, no other matter can be discussed in the SP until the annual budget is passed.

The other proposed ordinance for the extension of the deadline of payment of real property taxes was proposed by and Councilor Michael Fernandez, majority floor leader.

The proposal of Canto, however, seeking condonation of interests of business taxes of delinquent business owners, including the real property taxes (RPT) of delinquent land owners, was opposed by City Treasurer Romelita Alcantara.

Alcantara believes that the move will have a serious impact on the revenue collections of the city government and may not be able to realize its target for the 2022 budget.

She said the city government already effected the condonation of interests of delinquent RPT payers for 10 years in 2020 and continued up to 2021 upon payment of their full taxes and many property owners availed.

“Another condonation will not be okay because many delinquent RPT payers already applied,” Alcantara said.

She added that the deadline for payment In the case of the business tax and RPT will be February 20, originally set on January 19 but is not opposed to extending it to May 31 as recommended in the proposed ordinance. (Leonardo Micua)
