Pilgrims back in Manaoag with lax border restrictions

THE volume of vehicular traffic to the pilgrimage town of Manaoag has been increasing over the past weeks since the relaxation of protocols in all border control points of Pangasinan under Alert Level 2.

This was confirmed by Fourth District Board Member Jeremy Agerico Rosario who observed that his hometown, Manaoag, the pilgrimage center of Pangasinan, has been seeing the increasing number of pilgrims and tourists to the town.

“This is a good sign that indeed pilgrims and visitors coming from the other areas are back  in Manaoag, this is good for the economy of the town” Rosario  said.

From the start of the pandemic until August to September this year, the height of COVID-19 surge, only a few pilgrims arrived in the town because of restrictions along the highways and strict enforcement of the health and distancing protocols in and around the Minor  Basilica of Our Lady of Manaoag.

Acting Police Provincial Director Richmond Tadina affirmed that travelers from Metro Manila can now enter the province by simply showing their vaccination cards at the border checkpoints.

He added that actually even those who are not yet vaccinated are being allowed into Pangasinan “for as long as their LGU destination will accept them”.

“Basically, we ask the visitors to present their respective vaccination cards and if they can not present one, we ask for their identification cards,” Tadina said.

He added that the border control points require all passengers riding public transportation to wear masks and top observe the special distancing protocol, exempted are families travelling together riding the same vehicle.  (Leonardo Micua)
