SP to conduct inquiry on high electric bills

THE Dagupan Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) will conduct an inquiry in aid of legislation over numerous complaints from Dagupan consumers about the alleged overcharging in their electric bills by franchise holder Dagupan Electric Corporation (Decorp).

The inquiry was sought by Councilor Jose Netu Tamayo at the requests of consumers who sent him text messages complaining about their higher electric bills compared to the previous.

No less than Councilor Teresa Coquia told her colleagues that she used to pay some P10,000 in monthly electric bills but she was charged P17,000 in her last billing.

The inquiry will be conducted by the committee on public utilities headed by Councilor Karlos Reyna.

The SP invited officials of the Decorp and the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) to the inquiry that will be live streamed on internet to enable consumers to watch the proceedings.

Tamayo called on consumers to bring with them copies of their old and latest electric bills for the committee’s reference.

Offhand, Decorp clarified in its Facebook account that customers’ recent billings that showed a spike was based on generation charge, which is a pass-through cost, as the demand is usually high during summer.

Payment of generation charge goes to power producers and not to Decorp, it added. (Leonardo Micua)
