TEN Small Water Impounding Projects (SWIPs) in Balungao town are expected to benefit the town’s 618 farmers .

The Department of Agriculture-Regional Field Office 1 (DA-RFO1) said P162.6-million worth of SWIPs will be turned over to farmers’ cooperatives and associations in eight barangays of Balungao: Angayan Sur, Esmeralda, Kita-Kita, Mabini, Masa Florenda, Pugaro, San Andres and San Aurelio.

Engr. Dennis Tactac of the Regional Agricultural Engineering Division of DA-RFO I said these barangays are rain-fed areas so the establishment of the SWIPs assures the availability of water on the farms even on dry seasons.

Three of the SWIPs were rehabilitated and funded under the National Rice Program in 2016 and 2018 and Regular Agency and Calamity Funds in 2019 while the newly-constructed SWIPs were funded under the National Rice Program in 2018.

Tactac said the continuous water supply to irrigate the farms will enable the farmers to prepare for the second and even third cropping, effectively increasing their production and income. (Eva Visperas)
