Goodbye punishing 2020, welcome 2021

By Jesus A. Garcia Jr.

WE all know that year 2020 was not a good year for all of us inhabitants of the world due to the sudden presence of the dreaded disease called COVID-19. It ruined the world’s economy and already killed millions that shook and rattled the universe especially the rich nation United States, the number one country affected by the pandemic. Yes, the virus spares no one including the world’s super athletes whom many believed are immune to any kind of health threats because of their athletic built and training. Well, they were wrong. This contagious disease is the most lethal of all the ailments that I have known since the time I first saw the light of the universe, extremely fatal than SARS, MERS, DENGUE, EBOLA, CANCER, to name some, that afflicted the world. Really bad and worrisome. But if we read God’s good book, the Holy Bible, what occurred in the past and what’s happening today were all clearly written in Isaiah chapter 26, verses 20 and 21 and also in Jeremiah chapter 11, verse 11. To those who say this pandemic will soon vanish, know what happened to the previous world pandemic. Yes, this virus will be memorable to all mankind- it has already killed 1.7 million (so far) of the earth’s inhabitants, according to the latest report. Undeniably, this fatal virus has already victimized more than the casualties of the first two world wars, and is predicted to have more until the vaccines are proven effective. We pray for that. To God be all the glory.

A chess game is a face-to-face tilt but because of the pandemic, the annual tourney organized by the Pangasinan Sports and Development and Management Council (PSDMC) under the chairmanship of our sports-minded and hardworking father of the province Amado I. Espino, III, this time it was conducted via online system, obviously to avoid physical contact among the contestants, spectators and officials. I doff my hat to Gov. Pogi and the people behind him the PSDMC staff spearheaded by PSDMC executive officer Modesto Operania and deputy executive officer Marlon Domalanta as well as the Pangasinan Chess League (PCL) led by Vicente Sison and tournament director German Francisco for this great idea. It was held from November 27 to December 20 and was very successfully held sans glitches.

I was there last December 28 at the office of PSDMC during the awarding ceremony with Operania delivering the inspirational message.  (See the list of winners in that first of a kind chess tilt in our news story on this page). I can only give you the five names of the top ten winners that received certificates and cash prizes of the two category events.

The Traditional Category was won by Eivan Jacob Cruz of Pangapisan Norte, Lingayen. The four runners-up were: Marlon Mortel of Luciente, Bolinao, 2nd place; Antonio Almodal III of Poblacion Zone 3, Villasis, 3rd; Charles Casipit of Bonuan Binloc, Dagupan City, 4th; Brylle Gever of Poblacion, San Fabian, 5th.

The Chess 960 Category was also won by Eivan Jacob Cruz. The four runners-up are: Brylle Gever Vinluan, 2nd place; San Fabian; Allan Franieza of Bonuan Boquig, Dagupan City, 3rd; Rodney Palaming of San Vicente West, Urdaneta City, 4th; and Ormilito Ordizo of Victoria, Alaminos City, 5th.
Goodbye punishing 2020, welcome 2021.
