High spirits! (A continuation of Hi, spirits!)

By Jing Villamil

BELIEVE or not, it is generally accepted that 3 to 10% of us have had had an experience or more of seeing, hearing or feeling something that others have not. And sometimes, the percentage goes up to 75% if only we were not in a state of constant denial for one reason or another. This makes this experience incredibly common. Thus, those who never had this experience can be said to be in the minority!

Famous people who had spoken or had written of having this experience include Gandhi, Socrates, Joan of Arc, Charles Dickens, the music greats Robert Schuman and Carlos Santana, and even Sigmund Freud himself.

Early in life, her Mom assured her it is weird, but it is not crazy. Later, from research, she learned it is maybe a special gift, a sensitivity, spiritual, biochemical (excess dopamine), paranormal, emotional, cognitive error or some other explanation but not a diagnosis of schizophrenia or psychosis. Whatever, regardless she believed in these experiences or others believe in her having these experiences – what mattered to her was how she was going to deal with the experiences especially if these would be a continuing thing. And to find some sense of power, control and hope within it.

Definitely, she cannot proceed normally and healthily with her life if she is in constant apprehension of looking up to see or hear or feel something nothing or someone no one!

And so, she tried to live on a normal abnormal life. She resided most happily in big old houses. The confined spaces of condos and small apartelles she was warded away from by a feeling of breathless foreboding, as if someone no one was moving a warning finger: no, no, no, this is not “our” place.

In one pseudo-palatial place of 4 big bedrooms where she lived for 2 years, she was barred from entering one room by a hulking dark presence. After asking the long-time owners of the neighboring houses, she learned a construction worker was killed by his fellow workers and was stuffed in a drum unto which black tar was poured. The drum was found tucked hidden among other drums and building materials inside that forbidden room. Since then, the “hulk” had been walking through cement walls and closed doors seeking justice, seeking entrance to a less darkly world beyond!

And in this post-war house of 8 rooms where she lived for four years, a tall Fil-Am lady would promptly appear at dusk, sashaying along the length of its lower and upper floor halls, holding a glass of martini in one hand, beating a music of her own with the other hand. In the mornings, a man would stand before furniture that had been moved from their original places, a thumb on his chin, index finger on his perplexed brow, thinking thinking thinking! Remembering!

In a light-hearted lovely instance, in the same house, a pink balloon hovered for a day, up to the high ceilings, down to bodies afternoon napping or sleeping the night. It went bumping bumping bumping through the long hall and its narrow doors. And paused at the altar before the stairs. It hooked its thread through the Child Jesus’ blessing finger for 2 hours. Then, releasing itself, it bumped down the steep narrow 2-level stairs and parked itself in the half-foot space between the ceiling and Mother Mary’s head. And stayed there unstirring till it has puffed flat.

A week later, a married woman helping in the house complained of a stuffy feeling in her tummy. Our girl diagnosed the woman to be pregnant! She was childless for 9 years.

The balloon was puffing huffing predicting the good news in the air! And nobody was getting the message!
