Millennial consciousness

By Virginia Jasmin Pasalo

THE Pew Research Center recently classified the generation of Millennials as those born between 1981-1996 (23-38 years old). Michael Dimock, the President of the Center clarified that these “cutoff points aren’t an exact science.” These are tools to analyze “the different shifts in how age groups are experiencing the world—socially, economically, politically, and technologically.”

Some lament that millennials do not care much about the world they live in, or their relationships with their kin. Some describe the generation as “fearless,” “empowered,” and “entitled”. My millennial nephews and nieces have varied notions on how they apprehend the world they live in. They have advocacy and purpose. Most of all, they care.

“Titaa imisshuu…”

“miss you too. Halika.”

“Nasa hotel ako, 7 days straight duty, 15 hours a day, unpaid overtime. Napapaisip na ko magresign, hahaha, after July. Iipon lang ako konti. Kasi wala nako time sa sarili, walang work life balance.” (I am in the hotel…I am thinking of resigning… However, I want to earn and save a little. I no longer have time for myself, I have no work balance.)

“puntahan sana kita kahapon napagod Tita Carol.” (I was supposed to see you but Aunt Carol was tired.)

“As in always nalang ako andto. Its okayy haha. I miss you teta. Meron ngtatayo Solaire Resort sa sm north sa 2022. Pag nagopen yun mas malapit. Tinatiyaga ko lang, maganda kasi exposure at yung brand. (Solaire Resort at SM North will open in 2022. That would be nearer. I am persevering here because of the good exposure and the brand.)

“true. i admire your foresight. by then pa-ampon na me sa yo hahaha.” (ampon means adopt)

“Oo naman Tita nagttiyaga ako para sa future natin nila mama ayoko pulutin tayo kung sansan, hahaha.” (Of course, Tita, I am persevering for our future with mom, I don’t want us to be found just anywhere.)

Most of the millennials in my family are conscious about caring for the family, protecting the environment, about sustainability and have the ability to enjoy whatever they have accomplished for their careers, and a consciousness of sacrifice and common suffering. They include their loved ones in their plans. And they remembered my birthday. Mira made a cake, Jam prepared the food and brewed coffee, JC and Ashang brought another cake. Ayen and Hazel were also there. The other millennials had more important business to attend to, but they also greeted me.

Ashang, the millennial with whom I have constant communications with, the one who made a promise to bring me and her mom out on Saturdays, but could no longer do so because of the conditions of her present work, always reminds me of the consistency of her love.

“Awabsyu. I wish you good health and long life. Tska wag ka na masyado paka stress. Biro mo mahigit 1month na us di nakapag bonding. Huhu. I miss u so much teta.”
