Here’s to our present-day heroes

JOHANNE R. MACOB

BANG went the gun and another hero was known. Well, we have been used to defining hero as a person who has sacrificed his life fighting for democracy, independence, freedom, liberation, or whatever you want to call it. Our national hero Rizal, is a product of that formula.

But as time passed, we have come to recognize living heroes as well. This was what the provincial government did when it recalled the valor of our World War II veterans. I, too, was inspired by their stories — stories of patriotism, and of love for the Philippines. It is, indeed, very rewarding to spend at least a day annually to reminisce their heroism.

Then, I also often hear people describing our fellowmen working abroad as heroes. Many consider our OFWs as the modern-day heroes for trying their luck, leaving their homes just to ensure a brighter future for their families. Yes, they are undoubtedly heroes.

Still, I believe that those armed men or overseas workers are not the only ones worthy of being called heroes. Heroism is relative.

Almost seven decades after the Second World War, there remains the battle for freedom. However, the desire to break free is no longer from foreign invasion, but, mainly from poverty. So I consider everyone fighting poverty a hero.
I salute all our people who have been, steering their lives towards economic progress.

Heroes are the leaders who have pushed the poverty level down by increasing employment through investments, among others. Heroes are the people who have been working toward improving their status in life and that of others. Heroes are the people who love life, and  continue to value life through good deeds. Heroes are those who have stood up for what’s right. Heroes are those who fight significant battles. Kudos to all these people. Thank you.

I hope in my own little way, I have expressed for others their appreciation to our present-day, living heroes.

Let’s (continue to) fight a worthy fight. Have a great life, you hero!
