Driving Business through Social Media

By Johanne Margarette R. Macob

WE are living in a high-tech world.

According to data from the World Internet Usage and Population Statistics as of December 31, 2011, more than 30 percent of the population around the world, that’s about 361 billion heads, make use of the internet. Every single minute, terabytes of information are transferred and accessed through the internet. Hence, we must maximize all the services the internet lends us to our own advantage.

One of the new trends today is utilizing social media to put up, maintain, and develop business. This strategy is widely known as social media marketing. Popular social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Google+, and Youtube can be great marketing tools for the business owners, may it be business-to-business or business-to-consumer marketing.

Any business owner can set up events and other promotional activities in some social media sites to engage fellow social media users dubbed as ‘friends’ or ‘fans’ of the site. Social media also allows businesses to create and link their company page — which contains the company profile, contact details, and other information about their products and services — that potential customers can check out. In addition, accompanying photos, video clips, and write-ups can be uploaded to certain social media sites to get more of the online users’ attention. Just one important thing to note: different social media sites have different bounds, Youtube, for one, focuses on video clips at this point in time.

Nowadays, any business can enhance its reach either to another company or to a larger customer base, or both through the social media sites. The best thing about all these social media sites is that they’re free of charge. It’s a marketing device that costs nothing. However, in order for it to be effective, the owners just need to construct the best strategy, bearing in mind a number of factors such as the limitations of the social media, the business’ goals and of course, the target market.

It’s a good thing to have new acquaintances through social media in the same way that it’s satisfactory to be able to use the social media to make money. Make the most out of the available resources, drive business through social media.
