A vegetable vendor’s son topped the March 2021 Medical Technologist Licensure Examination (MTLE) given by the Professional Regulations Commission with a rating of 91 percent.

Felix Jayson Magleo Vegella, 21, from Barangay Ilang in San Carlos City, a cum laude graduate from the Virgen Milagrosa University Foundation (VMUF), ranked first among the 3,251 examinees who took the MTLE given by the Board of Medical Technology in the country.

Vegella said it was his dream to top the board exam but after taking test and found it hard, he said he conceded that passing it would be enough for him.

When the results came out Thursday night, he did not care to see who the topnotchers were but earnestly wanted to check if he passed.

Then his mom, Yolanda, who was looking at the results separately in her mobile phone, slowly approached him and asked him, “Son, did you make it as number one?”

He said his mom normally talks loudly but when she approached him this time, her voice was low and was shaking.

Then they quickly scanned the topnotchers’ list for their joint confirmation. They hugged each other, screaming jubilantly and crying a lot, Vegella recalled. “Mixed emotions, happiness plus fear,” he said.

Vegella said he wants to work first as a teacher in his alma mater as his way of giving back and to share what he had learned.

He said he is offering his success to the Lord, to his family and a lot more. He said he talked  to the Lord from his heart a lot asking Him to help him continue reaching his goal in life every time he felt tired studying.

Vegella’s secret to his success? “Don’t be afraid to dream big because if you dream big, you will be motivated to do your best to reach it and you keep moving forward.”

He said he is proud of his mom for all her sacrifices to raise their family. “She is doing a decent job and I’m proud of her,” he said.

In a separate interview, Yolanda said, “All our sacrifices have paid off. Thank you, Lord.”

She confirmed her son spent most of his free time reading and studying.

Yolanda added that it was Felix’s aunt who spent for his schooling. “I was just a vegetable vendor using a cart in plying my trade. There were times I really had to run when policemen were around,” she added.

Meanwhile, the VMUF management in a statement lauded Vegella for this feat: “When it rains, it pours! Thank you, Lord God for all of these blessings you have given us even during this time of pandemic to include our dear University’s topping the March 2021 Medical Technologist Licensure Examination in the person of Felix Jayson Magleo Vegella.” (Eva Visperas)
